Recently there have been multiple news articles as well as documentaries that have gone viral regarding Turkey Teeth and if the price-cut reality teeth are really worth it? We have looked at alternatives to Turkey Teeth and non-invasive procedures that you can complete to create a perfectly healthy natural smile.Â
The articles report that people who have had this dental procedure completed have been in agony following and because they have no full natural teeth left as all the dentine has been removed during the procedure and are consequently having to think about having all their teeth removed and dentures or dental implants fitted. Â
A veneer sits on top of the tooth where there is almost 95% of the tooth left available, only a small amount will be shaved off if needed.
Crowns are fitted to a small amount of tooth and generally, this is because a tooth has become damaged due to an accident or erosion.
When teeth are shaved down to points this reduces the natural enamel and the dentine of your tooth (which has all the nerve endings in it) is exposed. Teeth can become very painful when this kind of procedure is completed and can result in abscesses and root canals. Â
Turkey teeth are shaved down much further than what needs to be done, teeth do not need to be that short to have veneers or crowns fitted.Â
According to the Irish Dental Association, 300,000 people travelled abroad for dental work last year alone and approximately 75% of those who had travelled required corrective work back home.
So, what alternatives are there instead of Turkey Teeth that won’t damage my teeth in the long run? Â
Composite Bonding
Composite bonding (also known as composite edge bonding, tooth bonding or dental bonding) offers a solution for minor damage or gaps in teeth.Â
Bonding is usually used for filling chips, fractures or gaps between teeth, or for fixing discolouration. A composite resin is attached to a tooth and shaped to restore its original appearance. The colour of the resin is matched to your teeth, so it will appear as though it is a natural part of the tooth and can be reversed if needed. Â
Composite Veneers
Composite Veneers involve a similar process to Composite Bonding but are used to correct more sizeable imperfections. The materials used are the same however, Veneers are used in cases where the surface of the tooth is covered completely. Whereas Composite Bonding only covers the tooth in part, typically local to the imperfection. A less invasive and often reversible alternative to Porcelain Veneers, Composite Veneers come with a host of advantages to consider.Â
Porcelain Veneers
A porcelain dental veneer is an ultra-thin shell of tooth-coloured porcelain that is cemented over the facial surface of your teeth and is used to correct more sizeable imperfections. A cosmetic dentist will prep your teeth you will more than likely be administered a local anaesthetic so that you feel comfortable during the tooth preparation and placement of the veneer. Your natural tooth is then prepared by minimally reshaping and taking the smallest amount off your tooth to create a precise shape to have your new veneers applied.Â
Dental implants
Dental implants are essentially a screw made from titanium and act as a replacement for the roots of your teeth. A clinician will then attach to the top of the implant your new tooth.Â
Over the fixings of the implants (the metal bit at the top), the clinician will add white composite bonding (a bit like a tiny filling) so that you will not be able to feel or see the implants.Â
They are used as a more permanent replacement for dentures or plates and are a more reliable treatment for replacing teeth.Â
Invisalign
Invisalign differs from traditional teeth aligning methods such as braces as it consists of virtually invisible and fully removable aligners. Free from wires and brackets, Invisalign does not affect your diet or brushing habits allowing you to eat all of your favourite foods and keep your teeth feeling clean throughout your treatment.
Instead of using brackets and wires to straighten teeth, Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners.
Each aligner moves your teeth a small amount towards your final result, you typically will work in the lineup for two weeks and then swap it for a new one which continues the process
Because Invisalign clear braces are removable it makes them easy to clean, comfortable and convenient.
