What is Straights®?

Straights® is a modern orthodontic treatment designed to realign and straighten teeth using a series of removable clear aligners. These aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed for eating, drinking and social events and, because they are removable, this means you’re free from uncomfortable and unsightly brackets and wires.

Because Straights® is such a discreet and easy treatment and a much more comfortable alternative to traditional metal braces, it is a hugely popular treatment option for our patients. If you’re considering Straights® in Leeds, contact us today to arrange a consultation and get your treatment started!

How Does Straights® Work?

If you’re interested in treatment for Straights® in Leeds, then we’ll invite you in for a consultation with the dentist who will be carrying out your treatment. During this consultation, you’ll chat with the dentist and they’ll be able to answer any questions you might have about your treatment. They’ll also carry out a check of your current oral health to see if there are any problems which might need addressing before we get started with your Straights® treatment.

Then, your dentist will get started on the initial steps and processes for your Straights® treatment, including taking photos and X-Rays of your teeth and gums as these are used to create your bespoke clear aligners. With our treatment for Straights® in Leeds, you won’t need to keep coming to the practice - your aligners will be sent to you!

Your clear aligner trays are what will gently move your teeth into place during your treatment. You’ll need to change your aligner trays every 1-2 weeks and each set of new trays will gently move your teeth into the desired position using pressure from the change in aligners. One of the best things about clear aligners is that they don’t affect your diet or brushing habits, so you can continue to eat and drink your favourite things, without worrying about damaging your braces and continuing to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

The main benefit of Straights® is that the aligners are removable. Compared to traditional metal braces, which are adhered to the front of your teeth for the duration of treatment, Straights® aligners can be removed when eating and drinking so that you no longer need to cut out certain foods or stop drinking certain drinks. They are completely adaptable to your lifestyle, so long as you wear them for around 20 hours a day.

Due to them being removable, they are also much easier to keep clean and it means that you can brush and floss with ease compared to metal braces - no more food getting stuck in the brackets! Another benefit of Straights® aligners is that they are completely discrete. When wearing, they are almost invisible and, unless you tell people, they are very unlikely to notice. Compared to metal braces, Straights® aligners are designed to correct a range of mild to moderate alignment concerns, such as gaps, crowding and under/overbites so, as a result, patients can expect to see results in a shorter time frame.
The length of each Straights® case differs from patient to patient. On average, patients can expect to see results within the first few weeks of wearing their Straights® aligners but it can take roughly 12-18 months from start to finish to see the end result. Some patients will see results much sooner, whereas for others, it might take longer. During your consultation for Straights® in Leeds, your dentist will discuss your treatment plan in more detail and with this, they will be able to give you a better idea as to how long they predict your treatment will take.
Over 14 million people have had Straights® treatment around the world, so it is a very popular treatment. However, it might not be the right treatment for everyone. There are some disadvantages of Straights® treatment but it’s important to remember that these are down to personal preference and don’t affect everyone. When you first begin to wear your aligner trays, you may notice that your speech or pronunciation changes ever so slightly due to the way that the aligners sit in your mouth.

Most patients who experience this find that this goes away after a week or so. Some patients also report that, in the first month or so of wearing their Straights® aligners, they notice that they have a dry mouth. We recommend that you wear your Straights® aligners for around 20 hours per day, so as a result of this prolonged wear, can lead to a reduction in saliva production and cause a dry mouth. This is nothing to be worried about and is just the result of changes in the mouth.
As part of your treatment for Straights® in Leeds, you will need to change your Straights® aligners every 1-2 weeks, or as otherwise recommended by your dentist. The exact time is dependent on your individual Straights® case and comes down to how many hours a day you need to wear your aligners as outlined in your treatment plan. If you don’t wear your aligners for the recommended time per day, or change your aligners regularly, then your treatment will slow down and it will take longer for you to see the results.
Although you will change your aligners every few weeks, it’s important to keep them clean so as to get the most from your treatment for Straights® in Leeds. There is a difference between cleaning and rinsing your aligners, as rinsing may make them look clean, but this won’t remove the bacteria build-up within.

It is recommended that you rinse your aligners with water every night, and brush them, very gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush (not the one which you use to clean your teeth) and clear liquid soap in order to remove any debris or food particles which may have accumulated on them during the day. Once brushed, rinse thoroughly. Whenever you are not wearing your aligners, be sure to store them in the protective case to avoid breakages or loss.
