Overdenture Treatment

Here at Space Dental, we cover all aspects of cosmetic dentistry. This includes the popular tooth loss solution of overdentures. Overdentures are a permanent form of denture that elevates the traditional use of dentures, and combines this with the effectiveness of permanent dental implants.

The reliability and security of overdenture treatment is what makes them so popular for patients who are looking for a solution for tooth loss. They are perfect for fixing any problems and insecurities that may have arisen due to missing teeth, and for this reason we offer bespoke and professional overdentures treatments, performed by our team of award winning dentists.

What are
overdentures?

Overdentures, also known as snap in dentures and magnetic dentures, are a type of denture treatment that is fully supported by dental implants, acting as an anchor in attaching the denture to the jawbone. This ultimately avoids the requirement to use adhesives which is needed for traditional dentures. The implants extend from the jawbone once fitted in sets of two or four, making it easy to snap the overdenture into them securely resulting in a natural looking set of teeth.

Overdentures are predominently used to replace either an entire row of teeth or if there are a large group of teeth missing, impairing the patient's ability to chew. Overdenture treatment is ideal for patients looking for traditional denture treatment but are looking for a bit more stability and security.

What Are The Benefits Of Overdentures For Missing Teeth?

Long-term Solution -

Overdenture treatment offers a much more permanent alternative to traditional dentures. The implants required to fit the dentures in place will continue to do so until the denture needs replacing, which might not be for over a decade in many cases.

Natural Looking & Feeling -

Overdenture treatment offers a much more natural and comfortable wear in comparison to their traditional counterparts. Dentures are known to be susceptible to moving around and sitting out of place, as well as being extremely uncomfortable, but this is completely avoided with overdentures. The implants secure the prosthetics into place, removing discomfort with the denture moving.

Support Jaw Health -

Patients who require teeth replacement solutons often are at risk of their jawbone breaking down due to the lack of support and stimulation that was provided by their natural teeth and enamel. Having overdenture treatment combines the necessary stimulation of the jaw with the help of the implant whilst giving patients the ability to have a fully functioning set of teeth to eat as well.

When Overdentures Are Recommended

It is always best to speak to our dentists when deciding whether overdenture treatment is the best tooth replacement solution for you. For perspective, overdenture treatment is offered as an option to people who are missing multiple or full rows of teeth, leaving them impaired when it comes to chewing and speaking.

Overdenture treatment would be recommended for patients who have experienced traditional dentures, but have not found them to be effective. Having the extra bit of support that overdentures offer with the supportive implants can make a huge difference in patients confidence, and also supporting their oral health.

What To Keep In Mind When Considering Overdenture Treatment

Whilst overdenture treatment is the perfect solution for groups of missing teeth, they might not be ideal for everyone. One of the things to keep in mind when considering overdenture treatment is the time it takes for the process to complete. With overdenture treatment, 2 to 4 dental implants will need to be inserted and fuse with the jawbone before the final removable denture can be applied, and the healing time for the implant can last up to 7 months.

Within the time it takes for the implant to fuse with the jawbone, patients will be given temporary teeth which will support their eating and speaking during the healing process. Although this time frame might seem like a long period of time, patients should keep in mind the permanent and life changing results overdenture treatment can provide, with a life expectancy of over 20 years in many cases!

Faq's

The process of overdenture treatment is not painful as patients will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the mouth during the process of fitting the implant into the jaw bone. The process of the soft tissue healing from the implants can feel uncomfortable with aches and swelling, but this will lessen after 2-5 days and can be easily managed with recommended painkillers from your dental practitioner.
In order for overdenture treatment to be completed, the implants will first need to be fitted into the jawbone. This will also require healing time for the jawbone to fuse with the dental implant, which can take up to 7 months. Once this area is completely healed, you will then be able to have your final prosthetic denture fitted and secured onto the implant. All in all, the whole process can take up to 8 months from the time of your first consultation, to the final stage of having healed implants and a new prosthetic denture ready.
The choice of whether overdentures or dentures are better is down to personal preference.

Overdenture treatment is more suited to people who are looking for a more secure solution for tooth loss that will not be susceptible to moving around and being uncomfortable, but still have the removable element that traditional dentures hold.

Dentures are held in place by using an adhesive to hold the prosthetic in place. There is a higher risk of the denture moving out of place if the incorrect adhesive or amount of adhesive is not applied. Traditional dentures do not require any sort of invasive treatment, unless patients require a tooth extraction to have their full dentures created.

If you’re not sure whether denture or overdenture treatment is best suited for you, arrange a consultation with our dentists today and we can help you to reach a decision.
Yes! At Space Dental, we have an anaesthetist as part of our team who is able to administer sedation for our patients if required. This can all be discussed during your consultation for overdentures, as well as giving you an overview of the treatment process as a whole.
